DONT FEEL LIKE READING? Here is a summary:
I just want to help anyone who is interested in making good photos.
This was originally going to be the first post on my new Website/blog. I figured i would post it here for later reference.
First a little about me
I originally bought this domain when i was considering going freelance in the design world. That never happened and i am still very happily employed as a designer part time. When i became serious about photography i decided to use this site as a portfolio. Oddly enough i became so busy with work (design and photography both), that my time to actually shoot a portfolio specific to my style became almost non exsistent. I may literally be the only working photographer without a portfolio. Ridiculous, right? What i DO get are a lot of questions when posting photos on random social sites. I realized there are a lot of people positioned right where i was 4 years ago. So I decided to use my website for something else.
But first a little more about me
I am 29 years old. I don't have alot of experience taking photos, and this is a gross understatement, when compared to the likes of David Hobby, Joe Mcnally, James Nachtwey. I have yet to master the stylistic portraits of Dave Hill, and Joey L., and hopefully one day i will lock into the buisiness aspect as well as Chase Jarvis.
There is one thing i have in common with all of these photographers. Everyone starts from nothing. This is also something YOU have in common with me, and them, as well. These guys all have amazing blogs featuring little hints and tips. David Hobby's blog is basically responsible for me actually getting paid to take photos. Seriously, i should give the guy 20% of everything i earn. This is the main reason i didn't start this website earlier. Who am i to give people tips on shooting?? Why would you read my site over any of theirs?
So heres my angle
I want my website to fill the gap between you(us) and them. I am still struggling to make it, to survive, to pay bills, and hopefully one day shoot full time as my only source of income. I want anyone who visits my site to feel like they are coming along for the ride. I will hopefully take you into the trenches and share some of my high points as well as my horrible failures (hopefully this will save you some of your own failures along the way). I may not be able to show you how the pros do it, but i can show you what works for me.
So i will try to use this site for a few things.
-I will take you step by step through my workflow during different types of shooting. (videos?)
-I will go over my editing techniques in as simple terms as possible with the goal of you being able to do the same thing. (screen recordings?)
-I will "blog" (i hate that word) about how things are going in general as far as my photography goes.
-I will explain and review any new gear i acquire
I will attempt to do all of this with the "new to photography" person in mind.
So what do I get out of it?
The designer aspect of my work has been taking up a bunch of time and i have not been shooting as much lately. Hopefully, this website will fuel the desire to shoot more personal work and eventually piece together a portfolio of presentable photos. I am not 100% sure if it is a good idea to have a website dissecting how i make each one of the photos in my portfolio, but i guess any publicity is good, right?
Please Keep in mind
As unqualified as i am to be telling anyone anything about photography, I am equally unqualified to do any sort of writing. Be prepared for horrible grammar, mispelled words, etc. It has been a LONG time since Eng 101 and i have no intentions of going back.
